Is your bathroom overflowing with personal hygiene products, cosmetics, towels, or dirty laundry? Do you wish you could wave a magic wand and make it all disappear?
My magic wand is in the shop, but I do have some tips to help you on your journey to a cleaner, serener, more organized bathroom.
A Step-by-Step Approach to Organizing Your Bathroom
Practical Tips for a Tidy Space
Step 1: Declutter
Assess the items in your bathroom and declutter. Properly dispose of expired medication, empty containers, old makeup, ragged towels, and unused or expired toiletries.
Be ruthless in your decluttering efforts. Only keep what you need. Focus on the items you and your household members use regularly.
Discard or consolidate duplicates. If you must keep multiples of an item (e.g., toilet paper, soap, shampoo), put the extra items in a designated storage area, storage closet, or storage bin.
When you need to replace an item in your bathroom, discard the old one and put the new one in its place.
Your bathroom is not a storage area. If it doesn’t add value to your life, toss it.
Step 2: Group
Group similar items together. Grouping will make items easier to find and easier to store.
Keep frequently used items within reach (e.g., at the front of a cabinet or drawer). Place the items you use least out of reach, yet still visible and accessible. You should be able to glance in your cabinet or drawer and quickly find what you need.
To maximize the space in your bathroom, use organizers or clear storage containers. Small bins, drawer dividers, under-sink storage racks, and shower caddies are perfect for grouping, categorization, and accessibility. You can see what you have, keep everything together, and easily move and reorganize items, as needed.
Step 3: Display
If your bathroom were a display room, what would you want visitors to see?
Consider using your bathroom’s walls, doors, or counters as additional places to keep your items neat and tidy.
Shelves, wall-mounted cabinets, and hanging racks are great places for items you use every day.
Maintain visual clarity and accessibility by only displaying the items you need and use frequently. Be selective about what you put in your cabinets, on your walls, and on your doors.
Be even more selective about what you leave out in the open. Only display the things you want others to see.
Step 4: Clean
Develop a regular cleaning routine and stick to it.
Wipe down counters and mirrors. Regularly clean the toilet, shower, and floor. Frequently empty trash bins. Return misplaced items to their designated places.
Dedicate a few minutes to decluttering, reorganizing, and reassessing the items in your bathroom.
Sanitation and cleanliness are key to maintaining an organized space.
Step 5: Enhance
Improve the ambiance of your bathroom by adding decorative touches.
Plants, artwork, or scented candles create a calming atmosphere.
Decorate sparsely. Add enough personal touches to enhance the atmosphere without overwhelming the space or your senses.
Make your bathroom pleasant and personalized, while still maintaining a clean, tidy space.
Step 6: Share
Organizing a shared space requires a shared goal.
Share your bathroom organizing system with your household members. If possible, ask for their input to ensure you are all on the same page and have a shared goal for your space.
Encourage them to clean up after themselves, put items back in their designated locations, and
keep their personal items neatly organized.
Involving everyone in the organizing process increases the likelihood your organizational system will stay intact.
That said, occasionally, you may have to remind your household members of your goals, or remind them of the steps for ensuring your bathroom stays organized.
Step 7: Adapt
Over time, your organizational needs may change.
Periodically evaluate your bathroom organization system. Make adjustments as needed.
As your situation changes, adapt your system to ensure your bathroom stays clutter-free and well-organized.
With a little planning, consistent maintenance, and regular decluttering, you can streamline your daily routines.
Follow these steps to transform your bathroom into a functional, inviting space.
Maximize your space. Maintain order. Enjoy your clean, serene bathroom.
