Storage Tips stacks of boxes in a warehouse

Storage facilities come in a variety of options. From drive-up facilities to multi-storied buildings, from garage-sized units to closet-sized units, there is something for every need and every budget.

Storage units are typically rented on a monthly basis. Use them to temporarily store your belongings, such as household goods during a move or storage for seasonal business equipment.

Before selecting your ideal storage unit, do your homework. Research the storage company, facility, costs, and amenities. Here are six things you should know before choosing the storage facility that is right for you.

Things to Know Before You Rent or Store

1. Costs

Determine the size of the rental unit you’ll need as well as the associated costs. Make sure the storage rental fees fit within your budget. Ask about move-in specials and rental discounts.

In addition to the monthly fee, factor in costs for locks, setup fees, security deposits, or insurance fees. Read the fine print on your rental contact. There may be hidden fees that will increase your rental costs.

If you get behind on your storage fees, the storage owner can (and will) auction off your stuff or throw out your belongings. Check your state’s laws for specifics, but know that storage rental companies generally aren’t required to keep your belongings if you haven’t paid your rental fees.

    2. Location and Accessibility

Is the storage facility in a convenient location? Can you stop by and check on your things whenever you feel like it? Are you able to get to your items when you need them?

Consider the distance between your belongings’ current location and the facility where you plan to store them. Think about how far you’ll have to travel if you need to access something in your storage unit. Routinely visit the storage facility to check your items for potential issues, such as damage or pests.

If you live in a city, a facility close to you may be convenient, but it may cost more than a facility that is farther away. Take into account accessibility, cost, and convenience when deciding the location of your storage unit.

      3. Climate Control

If you want to protect your belongings from fluctuating temperatures, humidity, or outdoor elements, consider renting a climate-controlled unit. Although a storage facility may be advertised as climate-controlled, if possible, visit the facility to make sure it fits your needs.

Does the climate control work? Are the temperatures sufficient to prevent mold and mildew? If the facility has indoor storage units, are the units accessible?

Climate-controlled storage units may be indoors, in multi-level buildings, or designed in a way that limits drive-up access. Before renting, make sure you can get your belongings into the facility without damaging them.

        4. Safety and Security

What security measures are offered at the facility? Gates, locks, video surveillance, access controls, adequate lighting, and an on-site manager or leasing agent are indications of a secure facility.

Critically assess the storage facility. Make sure your belongings will be protected from potential theft and damage.

Also consider upgrading your current insurance policies or purchasing additional insurance for your rental unit.

          5. Atmosphere

Is the facility clean and well-maintained? Is it free of pests? Is it in a high-crime area?

Find out what current and former customers have said about the facility and the staff. Read online reviews and ratings. Observe how customers describe the overall environment of the storage facility.

Make note of potential problem areas and anything that makes the facility unsuitable for your needs. If possible, schedule a visit and tour the facility. Consider how the atmosphere varies at different times of the day or on different days of the week.

            6. Open Hours

Find out when the storage facility is open. Is the facility only open when a manager is present? Are they closed on major holidays? Is it a 24-hour self-storage facility?

Make sure you will have access to your belongings at a time that is convenient for you.

              In Sum

If you need to store your belongings, make sure you can afford the rental fees. Ensure the facility is in a convenient location, safe and secure, and meets your needs.

Talk to the rental manager and ask questions before you commit to storing your belongings in a storage facility. Finding the right facility means finding the best place that suites your storage needs and fits within your budget.
